Located in the heart of southern Sicily, the Sughereta di Niscemi Oriented Nature Reserve is a true treasure of biodiversity and an important example of environmental conservation. Spanning nearly 2,939 hectares, the reserve safeguards one of the last remaining cork oak forests on the island, preserving a unique ecosystem crucial for Mediterranean flora and fauna. Beyond its natural significance, the reserve also holds historical importance, evidenced by the centuries-old use of cork oak and the conservation efforts implemented over time.

The Sughereta di Niscemi has witnessed centuries of history, undergoing various transformations due to human activity. Since the Greek-Roman era, the forest was exploited for timber production, providing materials for construction and tools. In 1601, the territory of Niscemi was granted as a fief to the Branciforti family, marking the beginning of intensive forest resource use. This indiscriminate exploitation led Stefania Branciforti in 1718 to issue specific regulations limiting tree felling, recognizing the forest’s importance for the local ecosystem.

During the 19th century, with the abolition of feudalism, a significant portion of the forest was acquired by the municipal government in 1852 and later allocated to farmers for cultivation. This process further reduced the forested area and fragmented the original vegetation. Despite these changes, some sections, particularly in less accessible valleys, have retained significant natural features, offering valuable examples of Mediterranean forest.

In 1997, the Sicilian Region officially designated the Sughereta di Niscemi as a Nature Reserve to protect and restore its original ecosystem. This recognition highlighted the ecological and historical value of the forest, promoting conservation and land enhancement initiatives.

Today, the reserve represents one of the last remnants of a mixed cork and holm oak forest in central Sicily, providing a refuge for diverse flora and fauna and standing as a significant natural and cultural heritage site for the island.

The Sughereta di Niscemi is located in southeastern Sicily, at an average altitude of 330 meters above sea level, within the municipality of Niscemi in the province of Caltanissetta. It covers approximately 2,939.37 hectares, divided into two zones:

• Zone A (Integral Reserve): Human activities are strictly limited to preserve the natural ecosystem.
• Zone B (Pre-Reserve): Certain activities compatible with environmental protection, such as controlled grazing and the collection of wild products, are permitted.

Geologically, the reserve sits on a limestone plateau with clay- and sand-rich soil, which supports the typical Mediterranean scrub vegetation.

The vegetation of the Sughereta di Niscemi is dominated by the cork oak (Quercus suber), the most representative species of this ecosystem. Alongside it, other oak species such as holm oak (Quercus ilex) and downy oak (Quercus pubescens) can be found, along with a rich undergrowth typical of the Mediterranean maquis.

Among the main shrub species present are:

• Mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus)
• Wild olive tree (Olea europaea var. sylvestris)
• Myrtle (Myrtus communis)
• Strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo)
• Phillyrea (Phillyrea latifolia)
• Dwarf palm (Chamaerops humilis)

Particularly noteworthy is the presence of rare and protected species, such as Helianthemum sanguineum, a very rare herbaceous plant, and an extraordinary variety of wild orchids belonging to the following genera:

• Anacamptis
• Himantoglossum
• Limodorum
• Neotinea
• Ophrys
• Orchis
• Serapias
• Spiranthes

These species, with their seasonal blooms, offer a spectacular array of colors for nature lovers and photographers alike.

The wildlife in the Sughereta di Niscemi is just as diverse, with numerous mammal, bird, reptile, and insect species that thrive in this protected area.

Among the mammals that can be spotted are:

• Red fox (Vulpes vulpes)
• Crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata)
• European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus)
• Wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
• Weasel (Mustela nivalis)

Numerous bird species, including several birds of prey, inhabit the reserve:

• Common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus)
• Common buzzard (Buteo buteo)
• Little owl (Athene noctua)
• Tawny owl (Strix aluco)
• Long-eared owl (Asio otus)

Additionally, the reserve is home to various reptiles and amphibians, including the western green lizard (Lacerta bilineata) and Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni), a species protected at the European level.

Finally, the area is a haven for pollinating insects, with numerous butterfly and wild bee species essential for maintaining the ecosystem’s balance.

The reserve is an ideal destination for hiking enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and nature photographers. It features several hiking trails immersed in lush greenery, perfect for discovering its rich flora and fauna.

For those seeking a more immersive experience, guided tours are available, organized by environmental associations and the Sicilian Forestry Corps. These excursions offer deeper insight into the reserve’s biodiversity and its role in environmental conservation.
