In the heart of the Sicani Mountains, in San Biagio Platani, lies a small natural paradise shaped by Aldo Bongiovanni, known as the “Shaman of the Sicani“. This remarkable figure is much more than just a farmer: he is a guardian of biodiversity, a connoisseur of medicinal plants, and a living symbol of how humans can coexist harmoniously with nature. Beyond caring for hundreds of plant varieties—aromatic, medicinal, and more—Aldo is also an alchemist, a visual artist, a prolific writer, and a passionate mythologist.

Aldo Bongiovanni’s story begins with a dramatic event that forever changed his life. At the age of eight, an accident involving a brazier caused burns so severe that doctors feared they might have to amputate his leg. It was thanks to a local healer that he recovered: traditional medical treatments were replaced with poultices made from medicinal herbs, which proved to be miraculous. This experience not only restored his health but also ignited a deep curiosity about the world of plants and their healing properties.

Aldo has chosen to live in total symbiosis with nature. His house has no keys or locks-a symbol of his openness to the world. The rooms are designed to blend perfectly with the surrounding environment: for instance, an ancient olive tree grows through the floor of a massage room, serving as a reminder that nature should never be excluded from human life. This simple and authentic way of living is the foundation of his being and his work.

At the heart of Aldo’s activities is his farm, “Dal Pollice Verde” (The Green Thumb). Here, in a true natural sanctuary, he cultivates over 400 species of medicinal and aromatic plants. The farm collaborates with the Palermo Botanical Garden and the University of Catania, working to protect endangered plant species and promote biodiversity. Every plant is nurtured with care, following strictly organic methods, and represents a small but vital piece of a larger ecosystem.
